Things We Love: Holiday Gifts for Men

Holiday season is upon us, so it’s time to start planning what you’re going to get everyone!  SkinOwl brainstormed some killer gifts for all the men in your life–and right before Black Friday too (you’re welcome).  These gift can be applicable for any guy you’re shopping for: dad, brother, boyfriend, friend.

SkinOwl Products for Men

Just because a lot of men act like they don’t care about their skin, doesn’t mean they actually don’t care.  These are all great SkinOwl products that men can use too!

Geranium Beauty Drops

Geranium Beauty Drops are great for combination skin but they are also great as a post-shave beard oil to help with ingrown hairs and as a fresh scented dose of moisture.

Mangosteen PM Beauty Drops

You use Mangosteen PM Beauty Drops so you can wakeup with gorgeous glowing skin.  What guy doesn’t want that too? It’s an awesome night oil to recharge your guy for the day ahead and an extra boost of hydration for the cold winter months.

Eye+

He may not need the makeup priming effect of our Eye+ but men wakeup with sleepy eyes just as much as women do, so why not give him a unisex cucumber scented eye cream?

Charcoal Beauty Bar

The Charcoal Beauty Bar is perfect for men because it draws out impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils, so it’s the perfect no-nonsense face cleanser for any guy to start incorporating into his routine.

Shaving Kit

A high quality shaving kit is a great way to give someone a nice gift that you know they’ll actually use.  We love this kit.

Espresso Machine

If he’s a caffeine lover then this is the perfect gift for him! If he doesn’t already know how to use one of these, then trust me he’ll love learning.  Warning: if he’s anything like my Dad, then he will be sure to offer you a cappuccino multiple times a day so I hope you like coffee too.  I love this one.

Nice Whiskey or Tequila

This is the perfect gift for all the guys you know that like to sip on fancy whiskey or tequila. For tequila, I love Don Julio 1942, found here.  My favorite whiskey is High West Campfire Whiskey.  You can also get them whiskey stones to keep their drinks cold without dilution.

Watch

Is he still wearing the same watch he’s been wearing for the last 10 years? Maybe it’s time for a fresh one.  MVMT Watches have a great selection of cool mens watches, I like this one.

Workout Clothes

Guys always need new workout or lounge clothes.  Get him a cool pair of joggers or some basic nice t-shirts but make sure to get a return receipt in case you get the wrong size or color.  I think I’ve gotten my brother this shirt at least 3 different times and he’s always happy.

Socks

You may think this is the worst gift you could give someone but I’m here to tell you you’re wrong.  Everyone always needs sock.  You can get wool socks if they live somewhere cold or get them fun ones.  Stance has socks for every occasion and they’re really nice quality.  They even have StarWars socks for anyone who loves the force and cool women’s socks too!

Tech

Any kind of new technology is usually appreciated by men.  My favorite new tech toy? Wireless workout headphones.  They make it so easy to run on the treadmill or for lifting weights because you can set your phone down and not worry about anything getting tangled.  Almost every guy at the gym has them, so if he doesn’t already have them I bet he wants them.  I LOVE these.  Great for any workout fanatic in your life, male or female.

Hobby Related Gifts

What’s their favorite hobby or obsession? Get them something related to that.  My dad loves mountain biking so I usually get him things like tire air canisters or new gear he needs.  You can get a case of specialty craft beers, tickets to see their favorite sports team or checkout this gift guide from REI for all the outdoorsy types.

Bar Set

This is a great 11-piece bar set for mixing fancy cocktails and looks cool to have on display.  It has everything you need to get started including a glass with drink recipes on it.  Found here.

What’s going to be your go-to gift this holiday season? Comment below and let us know!

Sweet Potato Dog Chews

This recipe is a great alternative to buying your dog pig ears to chew on.  The thicker you cut them and the longer they cook, the chewier they become so your dog can enjoy it for longer.  These chews take longer to cook than the other treats, so it’s a great DIY treat to put in the oven before running a few errands. They can also be put in the fridge or freezer for a weeks!

Ingredients

2 sweet potatoes

Cook time: 3 hours

Full instructions found here

Peanut Butter and Apple Sauce Cookies

These dog treats are quick and easy and most of the ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen! It’s pretty universally known that dogs love peanut butter and my dog loves eating apples so this is perfect for her.  If your dog likes bananas better you can substitute an overly ripe banana for the applesauce.  They also stay fresh in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks!

Ingredients

2 tablespoons plain applesauce
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 egg
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup rolled oats

Cook time: 15-20 min

Full instructions found here.

All of these dog treats are easy to make and make great holiday gifts for all of your pet loving friends! They also make fun DIY activities to do with kids.  Which recipe do you think your dog will like the best?

Feed Your Beauty: What SkinOwl is Sipping This Season

Everyone loves the classic holiday drinks but sometimes it’s fun to mix things up! At SkinOwl we decided to give our favorites a new fun twist.

img_59911-jpgcoconut-milk-peppermint-hot-chocolate-21

Photo and Recipe: asaucykitchen.com

Instead of plain hot chocolate we love to give our hot cocoa a fun healthy minty kick.  This recipe is dairy free as it uses coconut milk instead of cows milk.

Ingredients

1 can (13.5 oz) full fat coconut milk

3 tablespoons unprocessed cocoa powder

1 tablespoon maple syrup

1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract

Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a small pan and whisk until fully blended.  Heat for 5 minutes and enjoy! Makes 2 cups.

Pairs well with: watching the snow fall, movie nights and pretending it isn’t 90 degrees outside (we’re looking at you LA).

47106070 - mulled cider in a pot

Photo: blessedbeyondcrazy.com

Apple cider has always been a staple in my home growing up because my mom has an apple press and makes her own cider.  My favorite recipe is when it’s served hot and spiced!

Ingredients

12 oz Apple Cider

1 short cinnamon stick (3 inches)

1 Star Anise

1 Slice of orange peel (1 inch wide and 3 inches long)

Optional: 1 clove

Optional: Splash of Calvados in your cup for a night cap

Instructions: Put the cider, cinnamon, star anise and orange peel in a pot and put on low heat for 10 minutes.  You want to mull the cider which is a little less heat than a simmer. NEVER boil the cider or you will set the pectin and my mom will be very disappointed in you.  Not only is hot apple cider delicious but it is also great aromatherapy!  After you’ve heated your cider you can add a splash of Calvados to your cup which is a French Apple Brandy that my mom loves.

Pairs well with: a crackling fire, a romantic classic and a cozy blanket.

Another winter favorite for the cocktail lovers out there is the classic Manhattan. If you want a little more DIY with your winter drinks then this is the recipe for you!  My mom told me that the best Manhattan is always served with your very own preserved cherries.  When cherries are in season you can preserve them in Luxardo, an Italian liquor, and after about a week they are ready to be eaten plain, served in cocktails or over ice cream!  A jar of preserved cherries also makes a great holiday gift!

Ingredients

2.5 oz Bourbon

1 oz sweet vermouth

1 to 2 dashes angostura bitters

Orange peel

Real Maraschino cherries

Instructions:  Combine all ingredients in a glass filled with ice.  Full recipe for the Luxardo cherries can be found here.

Pairs well with:  Girls night out, edgy vegan leather jackets and dark lipstick.

Happy sipping and drink responsibly! Comment below and tell us which recipe is your holiday style?

Things We Love: Sadie’s Candle Moments

Candles are a quick and easy way to transform your room with only a strike of a match.  They are a simple way to incorporate more self-care and aromatherapy into your daily routine.  SkinOwl has three incredible candles that I love to use everyday for different intentions.

2016-11-03_skinowl_final-2

Currant is a tart-sweet fruity scent.  It reminds me of a pomegranate mixed with a raspberry. Currant is an antioxidant and a stimulant—it’s the perfect candle to light as a way to fight off that afternoon slump and revive you!

2016-11-03_skinowl_final-21

High Tea is a mild earthy herbal blend of healing black and white teas. It is a refreshing and uplifting scent that also helps to relieve my tension.  Fantastic to light in the morning to wakeup or to burn while drinking my favorite afternoon tea.  I also love to light it when taking a bath as it helps me to relax and relieve tension.

2016-11-03_skinowl_final-16

Gardenia is a light airy pink petaled floral intended to relax and de-stress the senses. Gardenia aids in fighting anxiety, insomnia and relieving headaches.  It’s the perfect candle to light when I’m stressed, before bed or anytime I want to add a little relaxation to my day.

2016-11-03_skinowl_final-19

If you had to choose one candle to fit your day perfectly what would it be?  Check back next week when all of our candles will be on the site and when we reveal a secret fourth candle. It gets my meditation juices flowing *hint hint*.

Things We Love: Our (New) Neck+

bannerd

We’re big on paying attention to the things that don’t always get the adoration they deserve. Especially, when it comes to you (our favorite people ever) and of course, your skin. When we thought about all of the areas that so often get moisturized, exfoliated, and peeled, we couldn’t help but think about how little love we give to the oh-so-often-forgotten neck, chest, and décolleté. And we get it. With so little time available for pampering, it’s always easier to care for your face, your hair, even your feet. SO, we decided to go a few steps further than “bring your face cream down to your neck” and give your not-to-be-forgotten nape a product all to itself.

Allow us to introduce our latest skin-changing innovation, Neck+ Concentrate. Formulated to prevent sagging and signs of aging, this potent treatment is brimming with smoothing, strengthening and firming extracts intended to lessen lines and combat crêpey-ness so that your neck and décolleté appear years younger. This non-toxic, ocean mineral based gel-balm is one of the first to specifically target your delicate skin, and we couldn’t be more excited to share it with you.

owl009_skinowl_neck_2_1560x1960-jptuf

Chock full of anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as Turmeric, Spirulina, Irish Moss, Yarrow, Jojoba Oil, Witch Hazel and a proprietary Ocean Mineral complex, this concentrate is good enough for your neck, chest, and under any of our AM or PM Beauty Drops. So what’s in it for you? TONS. Check it out…

*Instant smoothing upon first application.

*No sticky or tacky residue (double yay)

*Unscented so not to linger on you or your clothes.

*Side sleeper? Cleavage lines? Watch crepey lines visibly reduce in as little as one week when used daily.

*Too much time spent in the sun? Dark spots visibly reduce within 2 weeks.

*Skin’s appearance looks toned, lifted, and contoured.

In a nutshell, we love this gem. Our Spaghetti straps are in full swing and we’re not looking back. For a limited time, grab your very own bottle on Cult Beauty exclusively (and get free shipping internationally – triple yay). Give it a try and leave your comments in the feed. A simple NECK YEAH will suffice. :)

Happy shopping Beauty Birds!

Feed Your Beauty: Skin-Loving Juices for Rookies

Screen Shot 2016-03-28 at 3.59.09 PM

Juicing. It’s talked about. It’s written about. And while most of us want nothing more than to drive to our local market and buy every last MangoKaleCucumberLimeChard, it’s sometimes hard to put the juicing wheels in motion. To make things easy on you, we’re putting two of our favorite and EASY skin-loving juice recipes in one place, so you can make them when your skin most needs some extra love.

Strawberries & Silk

Strawberries & Silk

This refreshing, healthy strawberry-cucumber juice is also made with an apple and carrots, making it taste like the farmers’ market in a glass. The antioxidants present in strawberries give them their amazing toning properties. The manganese present in strawberries helps even out texture and increase vitality. Mix any leftover Strawberries & Silk juice with rose water and use it as a firming and purifying face mask.

INGREDIENTS

6 fresh strawberries, hulled

1 large cucumber, peeled and cut into chunks

1 large red apple, cut into eighths

2 medium carrots, peeled

Ice (optional)

PREPARATION

Working in this order process strawberries, cucumber, apple and carrots through a juicer according to the manufacturer’s directions. Fill 2 glasses with ice, if desired, and pour the juice into the glasses. Serve immediately. Makes two servings, 10 oz. each.

OMGlow

OMGlow

In this vibrant, healthy carrot-orange juice recipe, we jazz up plain orange juice by adding a yellow tomato, apple and carrots to pack in immune-boosting benefits. With vitamin A, vitamin C, carotenoids, potassium and antioxidants – carrots are a powerhouse of nutrients for the skin. The consumption of carrots is helpful in aiding collagen production in the body, a protein required to maintain the elasticity of the skin. Feeling a little lackluster and dull? Bring our OMGLOW juice into your belly!

INGREDIENTS

1 medium yellow tomato, cut into wedges

1 medium orange, peeled and quartered

1 medium apple, cut into eighths

4 large carrots, peeled

Ice cubes (optional)

PREPARATION

Working in this order, process tomato, orange, apple and carrots through a juicer according to the manufacturer’s directions. Fill 2 glasses with ice, if desired, and pour the juice into the glasses. Serve immediately. Makes two servings, 8 oz. each.

Thank you Eating Well for always being our amazing source of delicious and easy juices!

Skinny Tips: Why Our Body Oil Is Front & Center In Our Shower

IMG_0078

We get it. Body Oil isn’t the FIRST thing you’re grabbing when you browse through a Beauty Dept. We’re here to say…IT SHOULD BE. Your first response might be, “But, I always end up sticky. Or filmy. Or I hate the way I smell.” We thought you’d say that, so we created a Body Oil that doesn’t cramp your style, scent wise or sticky wise.

Packed full of pure plant oils and nut oils, Body is the ultimate post shower-smoother. We always tell our clients to layer their favorite fragrance on top of it. OR, add your own essential oils to truly customize your very own bottle. Here are two of our favorite ways to use it:

  1. Keep it in the shower next to a tuperware filled with brown sugar. Take two pumps of Body Oil per one teaspoon of brown sugar and use as an all-over Body scrub. You’ll leave the shower film-less and glowing.
  2. Scrape off (we use a fork, if we’re honest) some of your face bronzer powder into your hand. Next, put two pumps of Body Oil atop. Use this as an all over Body bronzer. It matches the color on your face and leaves your skin diffused and even.

After first use, your skin will feel quenched, even in texture and tone, and glowing. Say bye bye to winter skin!

Skinny Tips: Face Steaming 101

Screen Shot 2015-05-14 at 9.36.43 AM

With Spring in full swing, and summer quickly approaching, our skin can easily get confused with all of the seasonal flip-flopping. It’s warm during the day, it’s cold at night. It’s rainy. It’s windy. In a nutshell, it’s unpredictable. April and May are filled with weather ups and downs that can wreak havoc on our skin. Not to mention, allergy season is upon us, which can mean congestion, congestion, congestion.

While many people immediately think, “My skin is freaking out, I need to get new products immediately!” we’re suggesting an easier (and more affordable option) option: Facial Steaming. With just a few minutes, facial steaming transforms lackluster, dull, fatigued looking skin into radiant, bright, glowing skin. For such a simple procedure, facial steaming can offer some big benefits. If you are prone to mild acne, the biggest plus of steaming may be that your skin could end up clearer. That’s because the moisture softens the surface layer of dead skins cells called the stratum corneum (from the Latin for “horned layer”) This process helps to free any dead cells, dirt, bacteria or other trapped matter that could be causing breakouts, and it can allow your skin to better absorb any other products you might use after the steaming (ahem, SkinOwl Beauty Drops anyone?)

If you don’t have the time or the funds to book a facial, steaming is an incredible option. And most likely, you have everything you need right in your own kitchen.

6b2d62c47bb93bff6b314ff8ca5e5beb

You’ll Need:

*One large pot for boiling water

*10 drops of your favorite essential oil (Choose one based on your preferred aromatherapy: Lavender to calm, Eucalyptus to decongest and open the air passageways, Tangerine to revive and boost alertness)

*Optional: Mint leaves and strawberries are always great additions to any steam as they awaken the senses and promote optimist. Just chop up 1/4 cup of each (or both) and throw em in!

*Bonus Tip: Apply SkinOwl’s Beauty Drops to skin prior to steaming. The heat will open the pores, allowing the oil to penetrate even more, leaving you with soft, diffused, decongested skin. Amazing before a night out on the town, prior to applying makeup.

To Do:

Pour 10 cups of water into large boiling pot. Once the water starts to boil, add 10 drops of your preferred essential oil. After 2 minutes of boiling with the essential oils added, turn the heat to low and throw in mint leaves and/or strawberries. There should be steam coming from the pot at this point. (Important: Turn off the stove, so that there is no open flame. The next instruction wouldn’t be nearly as fun with a towel catching fire.) Next, take a bath towel and put it over your head and pot, positioning your face 8 inches away from the top of the pot. You’re officially steaming!

Bonus Tip: Steam once a week to ensure skin is glowing year round. This quick little treatment will leave behind BIG benefits.

Happy steaming, beauty birds!

To Note: If you have certain skin conditions that are aggravated by sweating or increased blood circulation, such as rosacea or a fungal infection, then facial steaming may do more harm than good for you, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Make sure to check with your doctor or dermatologist if you think you might be at risk.

Feed Your Beauty: Juice Juice and More Juice!

FullSizeRender (19)

Juice. We’ve heard about it. We’ve read about it. We’ve whipped it up at home. And some of us have even been lucky enough to go to a store and have it made right smack in front of us. With so many vegetables and fruits to choose from, it’s no surprise why most juices have five or six ingredients. As delicious as juice blends taste, we decided to keep it simple with 9 juice recipes that have ONE fruit or vegetable + honey + ice.

Fun Fact: When mixing vegetables and fruits, for best absorption, remember CARROTS are the only vegetable to be mixed with fruit and APPLES are the only fruit to be mixed with vegetables. Your body will not need to work as hard to break down each family’s nutrients. Bonus: We’ll tell you how each ingredients works to bring out your spring glow!

So, get out your juicer and follow along. Each recipe will make one serving of juice.

Juice Anyone?

1) 1 cup Watermelon (plus rind, that’s the good stuff) + 3 Ice Cubes + 1 Tsp Honey

Skin Benefits: Aside from watermelons extreme water content, watermelon rind contains a compound known as citrulline. The citrulline in watermelon rinds gives it antioxidant effects that protect you from free-radical damage. Additionally, citrulline converts to arginine, an amino acid vital to the heart, circulatory system and immune system. Better immunity, better skin.

2) 1 Cup Spinach + 3 Ice Cubes + 1 Tsp Honey

Skin Benefits: The vitamin A in spinach has antioxidant activity. It keeps your skin cells healthy and repairs wounds. One cup of spinach contains 943 micrograms of this nutrient, which is more than the recommended daily value for adults. Additionally, Vitamin C is another antioxidant in spinach that works to repair skin cells and keep your skin looking beautiful. You’ll want a good amount of food-sourced vitamin C to make collagen, a protein used to manufacture new skin cells.

3) 1 Cup Pineapple + 3 Ice Cubes + 1 Tsp Honey

Skin Benefits: Red-skinned mamas, listen up! The Vitamin C in pineapple has long been considered to be the most effective vitamin for people with sensitive or inflamed skin, or for those with acne. Pineapple juice also contains vitamins A, which has the ability to reduce inflammation and also act as a natural anti-fungal and antibacterial. Sounds good to us!

4) 1 Cup Red Beets + 4 Ice Cubes + 1 Tsp Honey

Skin Benefits: High in folate, beets stimulate the production and repair of cells, which helps protect against premature aging. Hip hip! While beet juice isn’t always the most delicious, pairing it with honey will give it the sweet taste you’re familiar with in other juices.

5) 1 Cup Rasberries OR Strawberries + 2 Ice Cubes + 1 Tsp Honey

Skin Benefits: These gem-toned berries are used medicinally and topically for its antimicrobial and soothing qualities like reducing inflammation, calming irritation and toning the skin. These red fruits are very rich in antioxidant vitamins C and A, and the chemical element, manganese, all of which fight off free radicals and leave you brighter and less lackluster.

6) 1 Cup Blueberries + 3 Ice Cubes + 1 Tsp Honey

Skin Benefits: Many of the vitamins in blueberries may neutralize or normalize oil levels in your skin, making it healthier and less likely to accumulate sebum. Vitamin A, in particular, is responsible for this benefit! Everyone say, “Thank you, Vitamin A!”

7) 1 Cup Cantaloupe + 2 Ice Cubes + 1 Tsp Honey

Skin Benefits: Cantaloupe contains Vitamins K and E which play an important role in keeping your skin healthy and radiant. The high water content hydrates your skin from within. Cantaloupe is also a good source of B vitamins, choline and betaine which keep your skin replenished and rejuvenated. You can even use it as a toner, for hydration and replenishment.

8) 1 Cup Carrots + 2 Ice Cubes + 1 Tsp Honey

Skin Benefits: We’ve given carrots a lot of credit for helping us to see, but now it’s time we give them props for allowing us to SEE healthy, happy skin. Between the Vitamin A, C, carotenoids, potassium and antioxidants, it’s no wonder why these orange heroes are responsible for visibly reducing signs of aging, scarring, redness and fatigue. DRINK. UP.

9) 1 Cup Green Apple + 2 Ice Cubes + 1 Tsp Honey

Skin Benefits: An apple a day keeps the DERMATOLOGIST away. That’s the new one. These fruits contain a lot of fiber, which helps clean the system and increases metabolism. In a nutshell, the cleaner your intestine and systems are, the happier and healthier your skin. It’s alllllll connected.

Which is your favorite? Let us know!
