Skinny Tips: Pop an Ice Cube

tipswelove_icecube-2

Need an easy way to de-puff and de-stress your skin?  Pop an ice cube! Sucking on an ice cube chills all of the millions of cells in the cheeks and face, resulting in plump, rejuvenated skin. Whether you’ve had a few too many cocktails the night before or didn’t catch enough zzz’s, this quick trick is sure to jumpstart your cells and add a bit more H2O  to the day.

Fun fact: When used externally, ice freezes the pores, removing extra oil and dirt from your skin. Rubbing ice cubes on face means less swelling on the larger, more painful pimples.

Happy Ice-ing!

Feed Your Beauty: Honey Chipotle Chicken Bowls

We love protein! Not only is it yummy and filling, but eating enough protein helps to build collagen, which helps the skin appear (and feel) supple. Proteins are necessary for tissue repair and for the construction of new skin tissue. Every skin cell needs protein to maintain its life. Protein is also the primary substance used to “replace” worn-out or dead skin cells.  In other words, getting enough protein in your diet will help you maintain youthful skin! Which is why we were super excited when we came across this recipe for Honey Chipotle Chicken Bowls. The combo of quinoa and chicken give it a double dose of protein! So go ahead and make this your next meal, your skin will thank you for it!

chipotle chicken bowl recipe

Ingredients:

honey chipotle chicken
1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup olive oil
3 tablespoons adobo sauce, from a can of chipotles in adobo
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon dijon mustard
1 tablespoon honey mustard
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
4 garlic cloves, minced

salad
6 cups spring greens
1/2 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
1/4 cup torn fresh cilantro
4 green onions, sliced
1 avocado, sliced
1 lime, juiced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 tablespoon honey

lime quinoa
1/2 cup uncooked quinoa, rinsed
1 cup low-sodium chicken or vegetable stock, or even water
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 lime, juiced and zest freshly grated
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Directions:

Add the chicken breasts to a baking dish or ziplock bag and season with salt and pepper. In a bowl, whisk together the olive oil, adobo, honey, mustards, cilantro and garlic. Pour the marinade over the chicken, covering it evenly. Place it in the fridge and marinate for at least 2 hours, or even overnight.

When you’re ready to make the meal, heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add a tiny bit of olive oil and add the chicken, then cover the skillet and cook until the chicken is deeply browned on both sides and cooked in the center, about 6 minutes per side.

To make the salads, add the greens in a large bowl and toss them with a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Add the chicken on top along with the quinoa, the tomatoes, cilantro, green onions and avocado. Drizzle the bowl with the lime juice, olive oil and honey. Serve!

lime quinoa
Add the quinoa and stock (or water) to a saucepan over high heat and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Cook for about 15 minutes, or until all the liquid is absorbed. Stir in the coconut oil (you can swap butter), lime juice, zest, salt and pepper.

Wise Words: Live From Intention

intention skinowl

How often do you find yourself doing something out of habit? Something simple like eating some ice cream when you’ve had a stressful day. Maybe it started when you were a kid; mom got you some ice cream after getting a shot at the doctor. It was sweet and delicious and fun, and it made you feel better about the difficult situation that you had been through at the doctor. Cut to years later, we’re still grabbing for a pint of ice cream to ease the pain! It was cute as a kid but now it’s sitting on your thighs and your arteries and your skin! The habit is reaching for the ice cream but what’s the intention? Trying to soothe yourself? So how about acting from the intention, because as adults we know that ice cream is only soothing for about 5 minutes, and then it leaves an even bigger stress in its place when you realize how many calories you just ate! The next time we go through something stressful we are going to go to a yoga class, or go out to the garden, or grab our camera and take pictures, or even just ask our friend for a long hug! We are going to try an action that is truly soothing and will help fill our minds and bodies with positivity! How about you? How will you replace habit with intention?

We were bowled over by the long list of delicious and nutritious ingredients. Just about all of the ingredients in this bread are great for your skin, especially chia seeds! These little seeds are intensely anti-inflammatory, calming and antioxidant rich, which means that they are helpful in restoring vital moisture, diminishing redness and inhibiting wrinkles. We will be helping ourselves to a slice of this skinful treat… join us!
strawberry coconut chia seed bread
Ingredients

1 3/4 cup all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup ripe mashed banana (about 2-3 bananas)
1 tablespoon coconut oil, melted and cooled
1/3 cup packed dark brown sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 egg
1/4 cup nonfat plain greek yogurt (I used Chobani)
2 tablespoons unsweetened almond milk (soy, coconut, or skim also work)
3/4 cup diced organic ripe strawberries
1/4 cup smashed organic raspberries (or you can use more strawberries)
1/2 cup unsweetened coconut, plus 3 tablespoons for topping (sweetened is fine, too)
2 tablespoons chia seeds
2-4 strawberries, sliced for topping

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease 9-inch loaf pan with cooking spray.

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
In a seperate large bowl, beat together banana, brown sugar, egg, coconut oil vanilla, yogurt, and almond milk until smooth and creamy. Slowly add dry mixture to wet ingredients, and mix until combined. Gently fold strawberries, raspberries, coconut and chia seeds into the batter.
Place batter in prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle top evenly with 3 tablespoons of coconut. Place sliced strawberries over the top of the bread. Bake for 50-65 minutes or until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack for 20 minutes, then remove from pan and return to wire rack to finish cooling. Bread is even better the next day (they always are). Bread will stay fresh for a few days when wrapped tightly.

Wise Words: Follow Your Dreams

follow your dreams skinowl

Sometimes the hardest thing is just to trust yourself. We don’t know about you, but sometime we find ourselves doubting our own feelings only to find out that our initial instinct was the right one after all. It’s easy to let the opinions of friends, and society as a whole, color our own ideas and dreams. But no one knows YOU like you know YOU! And no one has the exact same dream and perspective that YOU have! The world needs new ideas, new dreams, new passions… the world needs YOU and your dreams. Because when you follow your gut, when you follow your dreams, you are being true to yourself, and there is nothing more inspiring and more moving than truth. We’ve decided to silence the outside noise, find our own inner truth, and let our dreams show us the way… we hope you’ll join us!

Promos: LoveLife Giveaway – Annie’s Experience/Results

lovelife results copy

RESULTS:

“In a nutshell, I have never felt better. While I still have a few more days left of the Program this time around, I can vividly remember the benefits of the Program when I did it last May. Not only did I lost 11 lbs. in 21 days, but I slept more soundly than I had in years. The workload involved in running a business would often keep me up late and to be honest, it wasn’t always easy to drift off once the work was done. When my body was being fed fresh, alkalized foods, my body thanked me in the form of good sleep and energy that lasted me an entire day. My skin glowed and I promise my hair grew an inch! I felt….balanced. Confident. In control. I am forever indebted to Kim Love and her LoveLife team for introducing me to a lifestyle that will last me a lifetime.”

Promos: LoveLife Giveaway – Annie’s Experience/Favorite Recipes

lovelife lettuce lentil taco

FAVORITE RECIPES:

“I am a creature of habit. If I fall in love with a recipe, I make it over and over again. People ask me how I don’t get sick of whatever food I obsess over, but I don’t. I get the same way about music. If there’s a song I love, I play it over and over. That said, there are a few recipes I cannot get enough of. For breakfast, I’m obsessed with the LoveLife Program’s Chia Pudding with Banana and Honey. For lunch, I love Lettuce Wrapped Lentil Tacos, and for dinner, I love a hearty, hot bowl of homemade vegetable soup. I added so many new vegetables that I had never tried before, such as Jicama and Watermelon Radishes. And for dessert….Strawberries and Cinnamon, dipped in Apple Honey. Yep, Apple Honey. One word: Yum.”
