It’s been almost a year since we released our first Maqui Berry product, our Beauty Whip, which was soon followed by the release of our Maqui Berry Beauty Drops. For those of you who might not know, here at SkinOwl, we pride ourselves on delivering ingredients to the beauty industry that have never before been seen in skincare.
Our first super-ingredient innovation was our Mangosteen Beauty Drops, which have been since discontinued due to our strong belief in sustainability and environmental preservation. Learn more here. But a sad goodbye to a customer favorite brought an opportunity to bring another ingredient to the skincare market for the first time, the Maqui Berry.
Why the Maqui Berry?
Upon discovering this superfruit, Annie Tevelin, our founder, scoured the internet to hunt down more information on this elusive ingredient. Why was she so obsessed you may ask? It’s because the Maqui Berry has some pretty astounding properties.
Firstly, this superfruit has a 28,000 ORAC score, making it the strongest fruit antioxidant in the world. Antioxidants are significant as ingredients in skincare because they neutralize free radical damage with can lead to the development of fine lines and wrinkles, aka. aging. Free radicals are also present in our environment in the forms of pollution, cigarette smoke, pesticides, certain drugs, and even radiation. So protecting your skin with antioxidants is essential to combat these environmental skin-damagers.
The Maqui Berry also has powerful anti-inflammatory benefits. Internally, this can help with inflammation-related conditions and diseases such as arthritis. Externally, this berry can help reduce redness and swelling on the skin’s surface making it great for reducing the appearance of blemishes.
Additionally, this delicious berry has antibacterial properties which makes it a good ingredient for treating acne caused by bacteria on the skin. Being rich in Vitamin’s A and C, the Maqui Berry encourages healthy skin production, stimulates collagen production, and protects the skin from sun-related damage.
Sourcing the Maqui Berry
Growing in the rainforests of Patagonia, the Maqui Berry remains relatively uncultivated simply due to its abundance. Even with the increasing demand for this ingredient in the US market, this superfruit continues to be wild-harvested by the indigenous Mapuche Indians. For a short period during the year, community harvests take place where these berries are gathered by these native indians for trade and export. These family harvests serve as the main supply of Maqui Berries to the world.
Regardless of the growing demand for this product, the Maqui Berry remains rather hard to find outside of South America, especially in its raw form. You may be able to get your hands on the dried berries or the powder at health stores, both of which are extremely potent sources of antioxidants. Even throwing a small spoonful of Maqui Berry powder into your smoothies or baking creations, as we did here with our Maqui Berry brownies, will supercharge your snacks.
Here at SkinOwl, we use a combination cold-pressed Maqui Berry oil and powder in our products in order to deliver the most potent forms of Maqui Berry to your skin. Our Maqui is produced at a state of the art facility that is certified organic and kosher
In short, Maqui Berry should be an essential ingredient in both your skincare regimen and diet. City dwellers will cherish its ability to combat the effects of pollution, while those looking for anti-aging solutions will love the line softening, skin firming, and complexion brightening effects of this superfruit.
