Skinny Tips: Face Steaming 101

With Spring in full swing, and summer quickly approaching, our skin can easily get confused with all of the seasonal flip-flopping. It’s warm during the day, it’s cold at night. It’s rainy. It’s windy. In a nutshell, it’s unpredictable. April and May are filled with weather ups and downs that can wreak havoc on our skin. Not to mention, allergy season is upon us, which can mean congestion, congestion, congestion.

While many people immediately think, “My skin is freaking out, I need to get new products immediately!” we’re suggesting an easier (and more affordable option) option: Facial Steaming. With just a few minutes, facial steaming transforms lackluster, dull, fatigued looking skin into radiant, bright, glowing skin. For such a simple procedure, facial steaming can offer some big benefits. If you are prone to mild acne, the biggest plus of steaming may be that your skin could end up clearer. That’s because the moisture softens the surface layer of dead skins cells called the stratum corneum (from the Latin for “horned layer”) This process helps to free any dead cells, dirt, bacteria or other trapped matter that could be causing breakouts, and it can allow your skin to better absorb any other products you might use after the steaming (ahem, SkinOwl Beauty Drops anyone?)

If you don’t have the time or the funds to book a facial, steaming is an incredible option. And most likely, you have everything you need right in your own kitchen.

You’ll Need:

*One large pot for boiling water

*10 drops of your favorite essential oil (Choose one based on your preferred aromatherapy: Lavender to calm, Eucalyptus to decongest and open the air passageways, Tangerine to revive and boost alertness)

*Optional: Mint leaves and strawberries are always great additions to any steam as they awaken the senses and promote optimist. Just chop up 1/4 cup of each (or both) and throw em in!

*Bonus Tip: Apply SkinOwl’s Beauty Drops to skin prior to steaming. The heat will open the pores, allowing the oil to penetrate even more, leaving you with soft, diffused, decongested skin. Amazing before a night out on the town, prior to applying makeup.

To Do:

Pour 10 cups of water into large boiling pot. Once the water starts to boil, add 10 drops of your preferred essential oil. After 2 minutes of boiling with the essential oils added, turn the heat to low and throw in mint leaves and/or strawberries. There should be steam coming from the pot at this point. (Important: Turn off the stove, so that there is no open flame. The next instruction wouldn’t be nearly as fun with a towel catching fire.) Next, take a bath towel and put it over your head and pot, positioning your face 8 inches away from the top of the pot. You’re officially steaming!

Bonus Tip: Steam once a week to ensure skin is glowing year round. This quick little treatment will leave behind BIG benefits.

Happy steaming, beauty birds!

To Note: If you have certain skin conditions that are aggravated by sweating or increased blood circulation, such as rosacea or a fungal infection, then facial steaming may do more harm than good for you, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Make sure to check with your doctor or dermatologist if you think you might be at risk.

  1. Great post! I’ve been hearing so much about facial steaming lately and it’s nice to read about how this is a good option for people who have occasional breakouts. Can’t wait to try. xoxo
