Hey, Beauty Birds! It’s Sadie, SkinOwl’s Director of Operations and resident travel fanatic! I just got back from a 10-day solo trip to Iceland and wanted to share some of my favorite pictures and experiences!
Winter in Iceland is incredibly cold, windy and beautiful! In February there are only about 7 hours of daylight and winds that can blow over parked cars! Iceland’s landscape is extremely breathtaking, I would absolutely recommend everyone go at some point in their lives.
Best Views
Walking on the Sólheimajökull glacier was such a cool experience and you get to use crampons and an ice ax! Seeing the Northern lights on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula literally blew my mind. The sky was filled with giant green clouds and I’ve never smiled bigger—like a kid in a candy shop and everything is free.
Best Local Food
Reindeer burger with camembert and jam. Also homemade fish stew (it’s better than it sounds)
Weirdest Local Food
Dried fish and mystery meat chunks. I ordered an Icelandic cheese board because I wanted to be ~adventurous~
Must Dos:
Hot Springs
There are a million hot springs in Iceland. I’d recommend people go to the luxurious Blue Lagoon but also to a natural hot spring! I went to two after hiking and they were incredible. You have to strip down to your bathing suit in 20-degree weather but the water is so warm that it’s worth it! If you’re brave you can stay in until it gets dark and wait for the Northern Lights to come out!
Biggest Waterfall
Iceland has an endless amount of waterfalls, I probably saw at least 4 a day, but Gullfoss Waterfall was the most breathtaking.
Scariest Moment
Hiking up a frozen waterfall. I went with a local who said it would be an easy hike but ended up with two broken nails because I had to climb down a steep mountain covered in ice. It was beautiful and exhilarating but never trust an Icelandic “easy hike”.
Fun Facts
Farmers get trained to be first responders because Iceland’s weather and terrain can be dangerous and the population is spread so thin that normal people risk their lives just to help out in emergencies. Also if you’re single checkout Tinder in Reykjavik…there are some cuties hiding on this frozen Island!
